Bringing History and Nature to Life

TARBERT CASTLE HERITAGE PARK

Argyll + Bute, Scotland, PA29 6UD

Our Community Woodland

During 2013-14, a community woodland and nature conservation area was established in the sheltered valley just behind the Castle.

Volunteers cleared the area, opening up blocked ditches, creating a wildlife pool, planting trees, forming paths and fencing, and seats and picnic tables.

Trees of species already on site, e.g. Alder, Rowan, Birch, Willow, and Hazel, are being planted, together with wild flower seeding and pond reeds.  Several species of Willow have been used, which are suitable for harvesting for basket making, and some coppicing will be carried out in due course.

Now completed, the area is open to residents and visitors, and is being used by Tarbert Academy as an outdoor classroom and by the After School care group for outdoor activities.

The woodland with its nature pond and varied habitats now forms part of the Castle Heritage Park, with something for everyone.
