Project DIG 2026 (working title)

We are considering carrying out an exciting new archaeological dig at the Castle  -  probably in Spring 2026.  We want to know whether there is sufficient interest among volunteers to undertake this particular project.

It’s early days yet, but time flies when we're gearing up for such an event, and we can never afford to be complacent about how much preparatory work can be achieved in the months remaining before a projected opening day.

On Sunday 6 July 2025, we had a meeting at the Castle, to gauge interest amongst volunteers in taking part in the dig.  There was a good response; people were enthusiastic and were keen to get involved.  So far, at least twenty-two individuals hope to participate.

It will be a smaller dig than that which we did in 2019 (the major Our Castle of Kings project), but we will still need to raise some funds and obtain various permissions.

The aim of this dig will be to ascertain the position of the outer wall at the Castle's north-west side, i.e. by the harbour.  We are looking at the possibility of there having been another tower in that area.  Exciting!

The archaeologist will be Roddy Regan, who is well known to us, and he will draw up a budget and timescale.  As indicated above, we intend that the dig itself will take place in Spring 2026.

If you might be interested in taking part in the project, please contact me at:-

secretary@tarbertcastle.info

or come along to the next Volunteer Work Party, starting at 10.00 a.m. up at the Castle Orchard.  These work parties are held on the first Saturday of each month, and the next one will be on Saturday 2 August 2025.

Regards,

Lorna

NEW REPORTS

We are very pleased to announce the publication, here on our website, of two new reports written by our professional and esteemed archeologist Roddy Regan.

The first of these is "Looking for Tarbert Peel; an archaeological Investigation of a small structure near West Loch Tarbert Argyll", which is available here.

The second document is Roddy's "A Chronology of Tarbert Castle and the Lordship of Knapdale" which can be viewed here.

They make for fascinating reading.  We thank Roddy for all his hard work in producing these reports.

OUR TARBERT VIDEO  -  A Reminder to Watch

Scroll down this page  -  to Welcome To Our New Video  -  to view our spectacular footage, selected to promote not-for-profit organisations in the village of Tarbert.  We, at Tarbert Castle Trust, worked with Tarbert (Loch Fyne) Harbour Authority (THA) as partners in the preparation of the film.  It's brilliant.

Welcome To Our New Video

We, at Tarbert Castle Trust, are fortunate, in that one of our younger volunteers is a drone photographer.  Together, in recent months, we have worked with Tarbert (Loch Fyne) Harbour Authority (THA) as partners in the preparation of a video which promotes not-for-profit organisations in our village.  The new production, which you can watch right here on this page, is showing also on a high-brightness daylight monitor in a window  -  a real window  -  adjacent to the walkway leading to the THA Marina.  Also in the window of the public library in Harbour Street.

We intend that it will be of interest to those who are familiar with Tarbert, as well as to those who have not yet had the pleasure of visiting in person our fine and historic West Coast fishing village, our Castle Heritage Park, and the scenic territory of North Kintyre and South Knapdale.

We hope that the footage will be enjoyed far and wide.
